James D'Leon

Born in South Korea into a musical family, Steinway Artist James D’León began studying piano at age four and gave his first recital at five. By age twelve, he had performed the Grieg Piano Concerto with the San Francisco Symphony and Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23 with the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra. At fourteen, he made his debut with The Philadelphia Orchestra performing Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2.

D’León earned his undergraduate degree summa cum laude from Temple University and his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance and Literature from the Eastman School of Music. His career has included honors and recognition in international competitions including the Bachauer, Kapell, Leeds, Van Cliburn, Naumburg, and New York Artist International competitions, the latter leading to his Carnegie Hall debut. He was awarded the Gold Medal at the New Orleans International Piano Competition.

A Steinway Artist since 2009, D’León has performed extensively throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe, including appearances in England, Ireland, Italy, and Germany. His performances have been praised by publications including The Philadelphia Inquirer, which described his playing as “exciting pianism filled with powerful emotion,” and International Piano Magazine, which called his recital “a sheer and dazzling delight.” He has appeared at festivals including Banff, the Boyle Festival in Ireland, the Schlern Festival in the Italian Alps, and the Mendocino Music Festival.

Equally at home as a soloist, concerto performer, and chamber musician, D’León has collaborated with ensembles including the Muir String Quartet and Shanghai String Quartet. He has presented master classes at more than 75 universities internationally and has served as an adjudicator for piano competitions. His recording projects have received critical acclaim, including a review in American Record Guide calling his playing “a revelation and a real treasure.”

D’León is also the co-founder, with pianist Alwen Yeung, of Duo Fuerza, a dynamic one-piano, four-hand ensemble known for its exceptional synchronicity, expressive power, and wide-ranging repertoire. The duo performs throughout the United States and has appeared on both modern and historic instruments, including an 1845 Streicher grand piano. Based in Arizona, D’León remains active as a performer, recording artist, educator, and guest conductor, appearing regularly with orchestras including the Arizona Philharmonic, Mendocino Festival Orchestra, and Symphony of the Redwoods. His artistry is distinguished by commanding technique, expressive physicality, and a commitment to bringing both familiar and adventurous repertoire vividly to life.
