Chano Domínguez
Chano Domínguez is one of the most celebrated Spanish Latin jazz, post bop, and flamenco pianists of our time, having released over 20 albums as a bandleader, composer, and producer. Domínguez came to great international exposure in 2000 when he appeared performing his own composition, “Oye Como Viene,” in Spanish director Fernando Trueba’s Grammy Award-winning Latin jazz documentary, Calle 54, which also featured Elaine Elias, Jerry Gonzalez and the Fort Apache Band, and Tito Puente.
Chano’s interpretive talents are highly sought after for his authentic integration of both jazz and flamenco traditions, playing tangos, tanguillos, alegrías, compás de bulerías, fandangos and soleás on piano with a traditional jazz structure. He regularly works with an extensive range of colleagues such as Paco de Lucía, Enrique Morente, Jorge Pardo, Carles Benavent, Martirio, Wynton Marsalis, Paquito d’Rivera, Jack DeJohnette, Herbie Hancock, Jerry Gonzalez, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Michel Camilo, Chucho Valdés, Joe Lovano, and George Mraz, among others. His music has been performed by ensembles such as the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, WDR Cologne Big Band, Orquesta Nacional de España, Orquesta Nacional de Latvia, Orquesta de Cámara del Vallés, and the Orquesta Nacional de Costa Rica among many others.
He is a 4-time Grammy Award Nomine; and 5-time Premios de la Música prize winner, the Spanish Music Academy award touted as the most important recognition in Spain for musicians and composers. In addition to his recording and performing career, Domínguez has taught at The Juilliard School, the Taller de Música in Barcelona, the Bogotá Conservatory, and the University of Washington School of Music, among other institutions. Dominguez currently resides in Brooklyn, NY and records for the Queens, NY-based Sunnyside label. He is managed by Esound Music & Arts Agency.
